review 1: Four and half stars. An amazingly well developed romance between two very different men placed in an unusual relationship. I confess to having a weakness for telepathic communication. Fox fully exploited the telepathy to allow the first person narrator, Brady, a 19 year old recruit to tell not only his story but the story of Cam, the older pilot just returned from four years of captivity with the aliens dubbed the Faceless. Filtering Cam's story through Brady's sensibilities heightened the haunting sense of alienness. The telepathic link also led Brady to constantly question whether the attraction he felt for Cam was his or something that was just a product of sharing the thoughts of a gay man.I liked that Cam and Brady struggled to understand each other despite their abil... moreity to share memories and feelings. The ending was a bit rushed and open ended as I really wanted to learn more about the Faceless. I was very happy to see that another book is planed that will pick up where this left off.The science fiction world that Fox has created is a sufficient backdrop to the story. However, a lot of it felt naive and off. For instance there are apparently no cameras on the ship and no way to get in touch with crew members unless they carry a radio. (Too bad they couldn't invent some kind of portable wireless communicator :)). Also the way they questioned Cam, the first person to ever interact with the Faceless and Brady who they know has a telepathic link with him was not realistic. They were pretty much left alone rather then being grilled around the clock. But since world building and galactic intrigue is not the focus of the story it is more an observation than a complaint. It is also worth noting that Romantic Sci-Fi (including straight romances) as a genre is almost uniformly unreadable to someone who enjoys science fiction, making this book a delightful surprise.
review 2: Why 4 stars? BECAUSE IT'S FREAKING AMAZING!I loved everything about this book. Especially Brady's character because it seemed realistic. At first I wasn't so fond of Cameron Rushton. I think it was because of the fact that he wanted Brady but kept thinking about Chris. But I was condemned to be wrong about him. My heart was literally shattered when Brady figured out the secret Cam was keeping from him all the while :''( And I was glad that Brady wasn't that cliched character who would give up everything to save his love. He was scared and I'm sure as hell I would have been too. I would have chosen my sister over Cameron Rushton too. But all the romantic moments were eeeeeeeep ^_^ I liked those little brushes of lips and cuddling more than the intense intimate moments. Just imagine. If your mind was constantly breached by some stranger...Just a personal thought though. Kai-Ren. Why do I keep imagining you as Iason from Ai No Kusabi? Whatever *Brady's tone*. I kinda have a fetish for Kai-Ren now. :/ Whyyyyyyyy do I like Kai-Ren?????????I liked those two most bottom lines on page 160 for no apparent reason cause it got me laughing. In a nutshell, it's a great plotline with attractive characters. less

This is likeable sci-fi for people who don't like sci-fi.
