Singaporean Shenanigans

Craig and I went back to Bangkok to spend on last day together before we both headed off to our next destinations. We were going to part ways again but this time we weren’t sure when we were going to see each other again. After spending 6 entire weeks with him, I forgot how to be on my own again and the feeling of venturing off to somewhere solo made me really anxious. Plus, I was also really gonna miss him! So I decided to go to Singapore where I had friends and fam to slowly get myself back into solo traveling.

My flight was early the next morning so I checked myself into a guesthouse not too far from the airport and also had really good WiFi so I could binge watch Netflix and take my mind off of feeling lonely. So when it’s 3 a.m. and my flight is at 6:40 a.m., I decide it’s a good idea to binge watch Friends until I can no longer keep my eyes open. Um, yeah. I woke up at 6:50 a,m., missed my flight and got my ass to the airport in 10 minutes to try to catch the next flight. Long story short – 4 hours later and many frustrating explanations to non-English speaking Thai Airline representatives, I had to buy a new flight to Singapore.

FINALLY, I got to Singapore and all I wanted to do was get to my friend, Arthur’s apartment. He was kind enough to open up his apartment to me and I was so grateful! When I got to his apartment he and his flat mate greeted me with beer and extended an offer to go to a party that same night. One of their friend’s parents bought an apartment in a newly built apartment and since there weren’t many occupants, he was pretty much throwing parties every week until more tenants moved in. We literally had the entire place to ourselves! There was a sick BBQ area, two pools and a rooftop jacuzzi. It was by far a different scene from what I had been used to for the past few months and honestly I loved it! It reminded me of my past life in New York – not that I had extravagant parties or anything but I think being with my friend and his friends, who were all very Westernized, brought me back to familiar lifestyle. I read about Singapore’s party scene in Kevin Kwak’s book, Crazy Rich Asians, and thought that these people and their lives could not actually be real life but quickly found out the book was probably very close to the truth.

Arthur and his friends were so friendly and such great company! They talked about their summer plans, which included renting out an island in Indonesia for the weekend and basically get wasted and renting a yacht for a day, which apparently is a normal thing to do there. Honestly it made me want to move to Singapore and stay forever. Not sure I could afford that lifestyle though.

The next day was spent laying in bed the entire day because I got way too drunk the night before and passed out at the bar. So embarrassing. But it was also one of the first days I slept in bed and didn’t go out and explore. It was so necessary! Like I mentioned in my previous post, it’s important to take a rest before you burn yourself out!

I ventured off to visit my cousin Bailey. He studied abroad in Singapore and so I stayed in his dorm while he slept on the couch. What a gentleman right?! He had class at first so I went off and explore Gardens by the Bay and Marina Sands Bay by myself. Gardens by the Bay is a must visit FREE exhibition and park in Singapore. There are some exhibitions you need to pay for but that’s up to your own choosing. I walked around most of the park before I finally decided that I wanted to see the cloud dome! As I went up to pay I reached for my wallet and my heart sank because I was positive it was not there. Yep I lost my wallet and everything important was inside, besides my passport. I took a few minutes to freak the fuck out and then walked over to the lost and found and reported my wallet missing. As I was filling out a form, a man came in asking about his wallet and they actually had it!! The lady assured me that Singapore residents are good samaritans and that hopefully my wallet will be returned to me. Everyone in the office was so nice and helpful – they let me connect to their personal hotspots to text my cousin. I decided to retrace my every step since I got off the metro. It was such a long shot but I knew I’d regret it if I didn’t at least try! I walked around for 2 hours searching and asking every lost and found. At that point there was only one lost and found that it could possibly be at and honestly I’ve lost all hope. As I walked up to the desk, thinking to myself how much of an idiot I am, the lady in the office stood up and said “HEY! You lost a red wallet right?!” HALLELUJAHHHH I cannot believe my luck! I picked it up and the lady ushered me to the janitor that found it on the floor of the metro. As I thanked her, all she was concerned about was that I made sure all my money was still in the wallet. At this point I fell in love with the people of Singapore. You don’t get to meet good honest people everyday!

The rest of the night I was so happy that I actually got my wallet back, that even when my cousin cancelled on me and left me exploring on my own I didn’t mind! I mean, I’m only visiting you halfway around the world cuzzo, but I totally get that you’re too tired to take a 20 minute train to meet me! Haaaa, just playing Bailey – you made it up the next day! So I went to the Art Science Museum and ended up loving it much more than I thought I would! There was an interactive art exhibit which kept me entertained for a good 2 hours – I felt like a kid again! Definitely worth visiting when you’re in the area.

The next day Bailey and I got to properly hang out after he finished his classes. We went back to Garden by the Bay at night and got to see the city lit up at night. This next part I’m gonna tell you guys about probably shouldn’t be written but whatever, it’s not like I’m a famous blogger! There are the super grove towers that are covered with plants that glow up at night and between two of them, there is a walkway that you have to pay a stupid fee for. Bailey and I didn’t want to pay so we circled around it after it closed, and saw a little opening in the back that we could crawl through and found stairs behind the elevators. So obviously we walked up those stairs and found ourselves alone, at the top of the walkway, enjoying an amazing view of Marina Bay Sands! It was definitely one of the highlights of Singapore and I’m glad I got to do it with my cuz. I’m not gonna recommend you guys try it but I’m not gonna advise against it either cause it’s so doable! Just don’t get caught! After all, what’s a life without some adventure.
