review 1: I appreciate that Lisa Henry doesn't feel the need to sugarcoat real life to write romance. There can still be love, and a happy-for-the-most-part, but she doesn't do instalove and canned drama (thank you). Her writing can be quite lyrical at times, with lovely imagery, so even darker subject matter is enjoyable to read based solely on her writing. Sweetwater started out a little slow, certainly dark, but it was necessary to form the foundation for all the players. It picked up at the halfway mark and whipped along from there. Thoroughly enjoyable and well-researched historical as far as I could tell, with a satisfying and believable ending.
review 2: Ah the old west where life was hard and men were harder, especially in a dark alley after a few drinks. This wa
... mores a well plotted and touching story which is what I have come to expect from Lisa Henry. I liked Elijah a lot. He was savvy enough to let people think that he was mentally impaired when he was quite intelligent. I imagine that his real handicap was more a lack of self-esteem than his partial deafness. I liked the characters Matt and Grady. For all their flaws I believe that they had a simple integrity. Harlan was the perfect rich, weasely pig that always owns the saloon in a western. He was richly fleshed out just as Elijah was. The ending was left open ended just like life at that time usually was. Definitely worth the read for those that enjoy westerns. less
