review 1: I really enjoyed this book, however thought I would love it - and was disappointed when I didn't. Initially I found the style of writing tricky. A lot was going on in a short time. There were times that I found confusing because the author was jumping around from topics/dates so frequently. Saying that, I did become enthralled with Helen's story of be a "survivor", raising 4 children on her own. I was also a bit disappointed in areas where I wanted more - particularly in the stories of the children. Perhaps Lisa Moore could write a series of books, each one from the perspective of a child.... Oooh! I would be all over that! In the end, a good read!
review 2: This is the story of how one Newfoundland woman survives after her husband perished in the Ocean
... more Ranger disaster of February 1982. (The oil rig sank and all 84 men on board lost their lives.) The book spans over 30 years and goes back and forth between different time periods. It is a moving portrait of grief, but I found the style too choppy to be engrossing. I appreciate that Helen found it difficult to concentrate, and her mind would flit from thought to thought; I do believe this is how the mind works, but for me, it diminished my enjoyment of the novel. less

Sparse like Newfoundland. Interesting how an accident affects lives.
