review 1: Beautiful writing with an excellent outlet (verse-novella was, potentially, the only way to get across the emotions while reading) but lacked character development. Although I liked the relationships among characters, the book didn't dig deep enough. Before we can continue living, we need to get over the difficult things first: the stabbing guilt, the anger, the emptiness, the reckless decisions. The book seemed to skip most of the heartbreak. Also, I didn't understand the romance between Brooklyn and Nico. They don't have much in common, are basically the same person, and you can't tell them apart from their dialogue. If anything, read it for the poetic and beautiful writing. But personally, I recommend What Does Blue Feel Like? as a better (and grittier) alterna... moretive.
review 2: I cannot for the life of me remember if I read Chasing Brooklyn or I Haunt You, You Haunt Me first. Due to reading one of them, of course I had to read the other. Lisa Schroeder has the ability to pull you into a story and make you feel like the characters emotions are yours. This novel is different from I Heart You, You Haunt Me because readers get different character perspectives. Alternating character perspectives is brilliant. Not only do you feel the loss that Brooklyn feels but also the loss Nico feels. This story is beautiful, it links together two people who are going through the loss of a mutual friend/family member. You would think normal people would make these kinds of connections when they lose someone close, but I feel like it does not happen enough. Not only do you experience loss but you experience a different kind of hope that would not have happened had the characters not come together and share their experiences of loss. I love how Schroeder introduces Ava (former protagonist from I Heart You, You Haunt Me) into this novel. It gives a certain satisfaction knowing where a character is after their own novel has come to an end. The reason I gave this novel one star less than the other is because I feel like the characters who were haunting Brooklyn and Nico did not get the conclusion or introduction they deserved. less
