review 1: This fantasy book truly is full of suspense, mystery, magic, and adventure. Evans tells the story of 10-year old Stuart Horten, who goes on a quest to uncover the mystery behind his long-lost great uncle, who happens to have been a magician. The extensive use of clues, anagrams, riddles, and cliffhangers keep the reader engaged and wanting more. This book also contains a lot of descriptive language and many seldom-used vocabulary words that would be fun for children to learn and use. This book’s quirky characters, humorous tone, and quick-pace make it a great option for a read-aloud for 2nd – 5th graders. There is also a sequel to this book, "Horten's Incredible Illusions: Magic, Mystery & Another Very Strange Adventure."
review 2: Oh, such a fun read!!! Th
... moree book reminded me very much of "A Series of Unfortunate Events" by Lemony Snicket and the movie, "Night At the Museum".There's a mystery element to this book that I really like- solving riddles, anagrams, rehashing what Stuart sees and hears. It's all so very intriguing. I really loved the fact that this book is about magic. It returned me to my youngest days when I believed that a person could by cut in two,and disappear into thin air. And although the triplets started out as my least favorite characters in the book, April single-handedly redeemed them. less
