review 1: The unlikely characters take over Lita Judge’s tale of the red sled. The little boy crunches through the snow up to his front door. He wipes the snow from his boots and leans his red sled against the side of the cabin. When he goes inside, a big brown bread peaks from around the corner. Hmmm? His eyes are full of excitement as he takes the sled and rides it swiftly down the hill. Holding on for dear life, he rides up and down the hills of the forest. Boy, does he go on an adventure, and he’s not alone! The onomatopoeias that fill the pages of this exciting tale bring the circular plot to life. From scrunch to scrunch the red sled takes an adventure like never before. The lively colors of blue and greens show the setting as being winter time in the forest. The diagonal l... moreines on the full spread illustrations show the movement of the sled and the animals as they ride down the snowy hills. Not only does the activity of the red sled take the reader for a whirl, but the circular plot structure as well. The sled is exactly where it was at the beginning of the story as it is in the last page. However, the theme of the story is detrimental to young readers. It may give a false idea that borrowing without asking is morally pure, as long as you’re sneaky like the big brown bear. Judge’s illustration clearly portray the criminal acts of the wild bear as he has the time of his life.
review 2: When a child leaves her sled outside at night, some forest creatures take it and have the ride of their lives. A bear, rabbit, moose, 2 raccoons, an opossum, a porcupine and a mouse are all involved in the fun. The mixture of onomatopoeia text and illustrations done in pencil and watercolor are whimsically crafted showing the excitement and adventure the animals have, including close-ups of their faces. less

Pretty and cute, a good option for those looking for wordless, or onomatopoeia books.
