review 1: Liz Curtis Higgs has done it again: written a Biblical allegory beautifully set in a Scottish background. This time, she takes the story of Ruth and Naomi from Ruth 1:1-18. Lady Elisabeth Kerr and Dowager Lady Marjory Kerr live in Edinburgh in 1745, just as bonny Prince Charlie rides into town on his fated journey to retake the English throne. Elisabeth, from the Highlands, is a Jacobite (supporter of the Prince), and her family gets drawn into the political struggle, with wide-reaching consequences for Elisabeth and Marjory.Higgs captures long-ago Edinburgh in a captivating way - the city is a living, breathing entity in her story. Her descriptions make you feel like you are there with her characters, walking the plainstanes of the streets. Having spent a month in Edinbur... moregh many years ago, it was a welcome trip back to a cherished place for me.Knowing the story of Ruth didn't spoil the story for me in any way. While Higgs carefully sticks to the main details from the Bible, her story is creative and original in every sense. I am looking forward to the sequel, "Mine is the NIght", which will cover the remainder of the book of Ruth.
review 2: I felt a bit misled by this novel so the low score is a combination of that and of not liking the novel's ultimate message or ending at all. But, I do have to say that the novel is well written, and if you like this genre the rating would probably be quite different. The story is really a religious conversion story where the main character comes to Christianity and embraces it fully. People die, God's will. No food, home is destroyed or you happen to be a maid, it's God's will. God will provide is the ultimate message and no room for challenge, questioning or even wondering why God might be doing what he's doing. When I first started the novel, I thought it was going to be a bit more complex and thoughtful, that's why I said I felt misled. less
