review 1: I read this about three weeks before I ran the New York City Marathon in 2011. The author writes about different runners' experiences and describes each mile of the marathon, a structure I really enjoyed. Reading about it, I got emotional and EXCITED about the upcoming race, and am here to testify that this book was just the kick in the pants I needed. I read it on a business trip, and once I landed back in New York I went running on Friday AND Saturday AND Sunday. Win!
review 2: Overall, I enjoyed this book, but it was much like a marathon itself.Plus - I liked learning about the history of the event and the major contributors who made the event what it is today. I also enjoyed reading about the stories behind the pro runners as well as the amazing regular
... more people. I liked how she broke the race down mile by mile and highlighted the exact area of New York where the race would be run during that mile. It gave a really flavor to the various neighborhoods and volunteers who help out the race year after year.Minus - It was long (much like a real marathon!) Some times I felt booted down by too much information. I was supposed to run this race in 2012, but it was canceled due to Super Storm Sandy. I decided to waive my entry for a different year, yet I did put my name in for the lottery for 2014. It is New York after all. As demonstrated in this book, there is no other marathon in the world like New York. As also demonstrated, it is a very difficult marathon with lots of hills. Part of me thinks I should be happy that the race was called, but the other half is still disappointed. If you are a runner, I think you would enjoy this journey. less

Was excited to read this, maybe I was looking for inspiration, but the writing was flat & boring.
