review 1: An excellent book exploring the difference between leaders who are 'geniuses' and those who are 'genius makers.' Through extensive research, Wiseman has identified key characteristics, assumptions, and practices of those who leverage and develop the talent and intelligence of those around them. I really appreciated the book, but see two unique challenges for connecting this book to the ecclesial context. First, the church is not a business in many ways, but particularly the reality that the people who surround me and are effected by my leadership are not paid, full-time employees, but volunteers. Second, the nature of consistory as elected, three-year terms provides some other challenges in application of this model. I think the multiplier model will be helpful for me in d... moreeveloping as a leader, but I will have to do more thinking about how this model would look in our setting.
review 2: Multipliers skipped to the top of my reading list as a result of a strong recommendation by our CFO, in light of the impact it made on his approach in several prior start-up endeavors. It did not disappoint! In light of other recent reading (Jim Collins, Gary Hamel, Susan Cain), the observations presented in Liz Wiseman's work were not earth-shattering; however, Multipliers did present a unique lens through which to view the leadership qualities and organizational structures that facilitate high-performance, innovation and general workplace satisfaction. Taken in concert with other frameworks, it rounds out an understanding of management as a skillset and leadership as a lifestyle that empower others to achieve excellence. The writing is balanced between research observations, anecdotes and frameworks and feels like a quick read. It should be on the reading list for anyone studying management, leadership and corporate culture, OR employees seeking a new way to understand the people around them. Dig in. less
