review 1: The Birthday Ball, by Lois Lowry, is about a young girl named Princess Patricia Priscilla. She is about to turn sixteen, at which point she will have to pick a husband. She doesn't like any of her possible husbands and so she disguises herself as a peasant and begins going to school in the village. She also has a crush on her teacher. I enjoyed this book and I think young girls would really love it. It is not only a sweet love story, but it is also funny. It also teaches kids that no matter how much money we have, we are alike. This is a very positive message for kids. Another thing that I liked, and I think kids would like, is the fact that there are pictures throughout the book. The pictures are just simple drawings, but kids enjoy having something to look at an... mored associate the story with. This is a book I would definitely recommend to young girls to read for pleasure!
review 2: This is about a princess who has a ball thrown for her. She has to find ther person she is going to marry at the party. There is lots more, but that is the basic story.I thought this book ranged from mediocre to just plain bad. It is from acclaimed writer Lois Lowry, and I do love her wonderful book "Gooney Bird Greene," so I was really disappointed that this book was not better. I think maybe she was going for a James Thurber-esque "Many Moons" style, but not quite succeeding. If she had editted the book down, it could have been enjoyable. For example, three suitors was just too many--one would have been enough. (Actually, four suitors because one was a set of conjoined twins. This was supposed to be humorous, but it was not funny to me.)Jules Feiffer's illustrations are wonderful, though. less
