review 1: I feel like I have to write two reviews for this book: one for the non-seminary-trained and a second for the seminary-trained. For the first group, chapters 1 - 4 will probably enlighten you for the first time that the Bible is an "Eastern" book. The Bible was written before Hellenism and Greco-Roman obsession with exactitude and stoicism saturated what would become the "Western" worldview. Truth in the Eastern tradition is more qualitative than quantitative, but no less truth! Chapters 1-4 will prepare you for the more detailed discussions in the rest of the book. For the second group, skip directly to chapters 5-14 and enjoy the more specific Hebrew language and cultural explanations. I literally put this book aside for a year after reading chapters 1-4 b/c I was bored.... more This weekend I picked it up and knocked the remaining chapters out in a few hours b/c I enjoyed them so much! Learning about Jewish idiomatic expressions and cultural references brings out the personality of Jesus and reminds us how so very human and divine he is!
review 2: With Tverberg's incredible insight and down-to-earth way of communicating complex subjects, she has nailed another great book on the contextual world of Jesus. One of the things that I just love about Tverberg's writing is that she is able to bring what I call the 'Jewish Hermeneutic' into a our world and explain it in a way that is so easy to understand, even if you're not used to all of the "lingo" that is often assumed within such conversations. I can confidently recommend this book to any student or parishioner that "wants to start reading about that kind of stuff" and know that they will be given a great introductory work without being overwhelmed.Tverberg seemed to strike at my heart with every chapter as she dissected yet another Hebrew word or phrase or rabbinic technique and I realized how practical the lesson was for my life. The book was so close to five stars. I was not a fan of chapter 12 (seemed inconsistent with the rest of her theology throughout) and thought the book lost some steam toward the end, but overall this was a fantastic read that I enjoyed very much. less
