review 1: Another win for Lori Austin!I thoroughly enjoyed this book and this series as a whole. From chapter one of book one this series has thrown me off guard, and this book was no different. This series does not romanticize 'The West' like so many historical romance novels. Oh no! It is gritty and hard and most of the times the people there live lives full of pain and misfortune. This series is about those people and how they have fought back and found love in the process. This book is about Luke (Annabeth's missing brother we heard about mostly in book two) and Rose who needs help finding her missing daughter whom the Cheyenne kidnapped. Rose seeks out Luke because of rumors that he once lived with the Cheyenne so she hopes he will help her find the tribe and hopefully her daugh... moreter as well. Luke, having been a prisoner in both the Civil War and to the Cheyenne, knows that going back will be the death of him, but since he already believes that he has nothing left to lives for he agrees to help Rose find her daughter.I am so sad this series is coming to an end, but I hear rumor of a novella coming out later this year. Moze maybe? Or Mikhail? I don't know, but I am looking forward to it as well as anything else Lori Austin cooks up.
review 2: Readers will enjoy being transported into the vivid exciting struggle of life in the Old West in this unique, delightful romance. Luke is now known as the White Ghost with red hair after being traded to the Cheyenne for white hostages, then living apart from them. A high price is on his head as he helped the Cheyenne against the military. He could not stand watching the soldiers kill hundreds of Native American innocent women, children and elderly and did what he thought was right. Rose wants to find the White Ghost and get his help finding her little girl, Lily. A year ago Lily was kidnapped after Dog Soldiers from the Cheyenne raided her Kansas farm. Rose is a tough heroine who shoots dead two Pawnee scouts who try and attack her, earning Luke's respect. They warily travel together, though Rose has to step in and pretend to be Luke's wife to save him from hanging after he is recognized in a town. Luke is still traumatized by finding his native wife and child murdered along with many others from the Cheyenne people who had taken him in. They blame him for not knowing that the soldiers would attack, and that is how he became used to being on his own. He hears voices of the dead, and Rose is able to break through his nightmares and memories as they grow close. The romance is as evocative and sensual as the descriptive setting. I had the pleasure of reading an ARC of this well written romance in exchange for an honest review which I am happy to give. Austin ties her series together with cameos from previous characters, yet the story of Luke and Rose captures the story. While decisions made at the ending are surprising, some, such as Luke's survival stretch belief a bit, though no reader will complain at the satisfying conclusion. The accurate portrayal of all involved in the brutality of life in the West will stay with the reader when the story is done. less
