review 1: Interesting story, but faaaar too repetitive and over-explained. (Does Ms. Brighton have to assume I'm too dumb to understand something after the 2nd explanation?) Historically though, Society at that time would certainly not be likely to be so accepting of a brothel catering to females. I tired of his constant moaning about being how unworthy he was of everything because he was a whore, as well as the overuse of superlatives describing him.The narrator, Fiona Underwood, while quite suitable for the task, was so very British that I couldn't follow the story at my usually preferred 3x speed and had to slow to 2x. [Just a personal gripe that I'm noting for my own records since most people undoubtedly enjoy normal speeds anyway.] 2 Overall4 Storyline. Original if not believab... morele3 Characters. Both a bit one-note4 Sex. Some blah, some hot2 Writing. Flow was fine, but lose the superlatives3 Narration. Flawless, just too "British" for my ears
review 2: I finished it, but it got sillier and sillier as I kept going. Our Hero's damage went from empathy-provoking to annoying a bit over halfway through. Our Heroine sure caught on to how to deal with cocks quickly (I should count how many times "cock" is used). The scenes in Devon at the end, all "WE DON'T NEED ANYTHING BUT LOVE" had me rolling my eyes - and trying to figure out why I was hearing creeper bells. Male villain? Is a villain because the cat doesn't like him. NOT EVEN KIDDING. The only other villainous thing he does is make a rude proposition later in the book. And yes, it's villainous, but those are the ONLY two bad things he does. Otherwise he's a cardboard lord who's rather polite. Meanwhile, there's a lot of loose ends. Like Our Heroine's letters. What the hell happened to those? What the hell happens to Female Villain? What is Our Hero's title? Just how are they related to "the royals"? Why is Our Hero's father's accent written so poorly? Why does everyone say "fuck" as often as I do if this is like 1867? What happens to Wastrel Brother? I know this is planned as a trilogy, but I won't be reading the rest. less
