review 1: I'm not sure that I read all the stories in this anthology. I know that I read Foster, McCarthy and Day because I’m a fan of their work. I’ll will review the stories that I remember and what I don’t remember I will acknowledge and give general impressions. Shelter From the Storm - Lori Foster This was a really sweet story. I like that they were into each other but didn’t think that the other person was interested romantically. Sabrina’s fear of storms was hard to understand at first. She seemed to think that Roy could never see her as a romantic partner because of her fear but that was not the case. He loved that she trusted him enough to show him her fear and know that he would support her. This story is Sabrina and Roy’s journey to each other even though they... more have been there for each other all along. Take Me Home - Erin McCarthy This seemed like a very intense story. I also was surprised to read a story about a woman who was pregnant as a result of choices gone wrong. She wasn’t tricked. She wasn’t assaulted. She wasn’t widowed or divorced. She was involved with multiple men and she ended up pregnant. That is just an amazing plot line to follow. The thing that sucked is that she was really down on herself. I understand being scared about the future. Raising a child solo is a hard path, but she acted like she was morally depraved which pissed me off. Sleeping around with lots of people is not morally wrong. It sucks that she didn’t use protection but life happens and you can’t control it. She has every right to criticize her judgment but not her goodness deep down. Anyway Sara runs to the guy who always makes things better for her even though he can’t help her with the problem. She goes to Travis. Travis who has always loved her and waited. This is his opportunity to make her see him as more than a friend. Oh my, it was a hard read for me because of how much Sara couldn’t see that she deserved the goodness of Travis and that she is worthy. Misjudgments don’t define us. Razor's Edge - Sylvia DayRachel was great. I like that she decided to go for what she wanted and she wanted Jack. Yes her husband is dead. And yes she loved him dearly but that doesn’t mean that she can’t be with Jack. Her love for her husband was different and she had had different life experiences which made her a different person. Now she is a new person, born from the ashes of pain and grief. She has decided that she can handle Jack. She knows that he isn’t sweet but she’s strong enough to take him on because she deserves happiness. Jack on the other hand is wallowing in guilt. He has always loved Rachel even while she was with his best friend. He never acted on his feelings but he still has a lot of guilt for what he feels is an emotional betrayal of his friend. But Steve made Jack swear to watch out for Rachel and his child and Jack plans to do that, but doesn’t know how he can and still maintain his distance when he is finally in the same location with her. Midnight Rendezvous - Jamie Denton This story I vaguely remember because I thought that Burnett had some seriously pervy moments.Maya was complicated to me because all I could think is how do you not know that you are more than your appearance. She seems to have come to terms with the change in her life but she has also become a recluse. Dime Store Cowboy - Kate DouglasThis is another story that my memory is a little shaky about. I generally liked the story. It seemed to be realistic about abusive relationships. I liked that Mark is older and his midlife crisis isn’t trying to find the hottest and youngest piece of eye candy. He actually wants some peace in his life and he wants to feel like he is living it. Betsy Mae on the other hand really wants to get her life together. She needs her family’s help but doesn’t want to go to them. She feels abandoned when they leave her to run the ranch with Mark. She also feels that she doesn’t deserve the help of her family. Throughout the story Mark challenges Betsy Mae to accept him and she keeps pushing him away until she doesn’t. They both learn about themselves and grow into themselves. Life in the Past Lane - Kathy Love This story I remember because I liked the perspective of rethinking how we understood the past while we were living it. The teen years are hard and in some ways those years influence the people we become. I like that writing this version of his column forced him to face his past and how he created the distance between himself and others. Franny on the other hand likes Rocco but she knows he won’t remember her. They manage to reconnect because she never fell for the image he put out there. She saw past the walls he puts up. I feel like this story isn’t much about Franny though. She is a hometown girl who believes in community and people. Oh and she’s trying to keep her B&B.
review 2: Shelter from the Storm (Lori Foster) - 4.5 stars, loved it!Take Me Home (Erin McCarthy - book #4.5 in the Fast Track series) - 3 starsRazor's Edge (Sylvia Day) - 3.5 starsMidnight Rendezvous (Jamie Denton) - 3 starsDime Store Cowboy (Kate Douglas) - 2.5 starsLife in the Past Lane (Kathy Love) - 2 stars. This had the potential to be a really great full length novel but as a short story it was a bit unbelievable. Everything happened unrealistically fast. less
