review 1: The story had potential but I feel the use of sex and rape degrades the protagonist's abilities. Her sex appeal becomes the center of her powers and reduces her to an object, not so much a warrior capable of leading an army like she is supposed to. I also found it very disturbing that the only way out of her troubles that she could think of was to have sex. Not the kind of person I want to be reading about.
review 2: Any Given Doomsday, by Lori Handeland, is a groan inducing pornographic novel dressed up as urban fantasy. I don't want to discount all of it, however, as it does have a few merits. It started better than I had expected, based on the very low reviews that I had seen prior to reading it. I generally tend to like some of the urban fantasy novels out
... morethere and this started out pretty typical of those. The main character is psychic and the book starts with her getting a flash that she needs to see a friend immediately. This friend is brutally murdered, but she miraculously tells the main character, Elizabeth, that the world is coming to doomsday and she is the pivotal part of it. That both intrigued me and made me groan for cliche at the same time. Unfortunately, it was the start of many more cliches. The evil monsters were semi-interesting, but rather cardboard in their display, which is fitting considering they blow up into ashes when they die. There were, however, some scenarios that were decent, such as the Hardeyville incident. This was an entire small town ransacked by werewolves. Elizabeth alongside her lover/most hated guy dispatch the werewolves rather quickly, though, without any real kind of danger to themselves. I thought these super-evil-beings were supposed to be a challenge? Apparently not. After Hardeyville though, is when things really start to go downhill. Apparently Elizabeth gets her new superpowers by having sex with other superbeings. And when she does have sex with these other characters, it is not in a tasteful fashion, it is all written out in graphic detail in every sex scene throughout the book. This is by no means a single happening, but after the first time, becomes the main theme of the book. And the scenes are a little ridiculous, as everyone is a sex god with god like bodies and so on. Not only this, but the main character is instantly turned on by nearly every male character even though she says that she hates so and so and thinks he's disgusting. It got to the point where I was wondering if Lori Handeland was actually a teenage boy writing about his nymphomaniac super woman fantasies. I guess it makes sense that she is previously a best seller for the romance genre. So I guess if that is what you are looking for, this is it, but for me, no thanks. I'll take plot and characterization over graphic sex scenes any day. And with that, I don't want to spend much more time writing a review on a book I didn't care for, with a rating of 2 out of 5 stars. less
