review 1: Tried to read this for 2.5 weeks and finally just skimmed through it. This story is about Jake King and Angela Huxtable who is the daughter of the PI in Get Lucky. Jake is hired by Angela's father to be her bodyguard as she investigates a mafia boss member of the 'game'. Jake loses all credibility for me when the PI calls and asks where his daughter is and Jake replies, "I assume she is in her room". WTF! This dude is supposed to be guarding her with his life. Instead he's planning on how to get in her pants. I will give Run Wild a try but then I am done with this author.
review 2: A real different vibe to the third (and final?) bounty hunter series. This time Jake King is going to meet his match and say goodbye to his playboy ways. This book totally miss
... moreed the romance and family feel that the other two hit on the head. The romance between Angela Huxtable (remember James Huxtable from Get Lucky?) and Jake is slow moving and progresses more in the subconscious level than it does physically. Angela is a control freak who doesn’t ever want a man to have power over her and Jake has never met a woman he’s had true feelings for, until he sees her again….Wait? Did I say again? Why yes I did! Remember in Play Dirty when Marc and Jake got arrested for trying to ‘buy’ those two women outside that club? Well one of those lovely ladies that caught Jake’s eyes was in fact Angela undercover. It seems her and her dad weren’t too happy with the King’s bursting in and calling the cops on their undercover mission. But when James get an important missing case, which turns out being for her half-sister, he goes to the King’s wanting backup for Angela while she continues going undercover to get close to power player Mario Mandela. As Greg King is declining the offer, Jake sees Angela’s picture and instantly takes the case, high tailing it to Chicago. Which is my second point I mentioned above. There were no mention of the rest of the family. In Get Lucky, we got to see Greg and Haley, but in Stay Hungry you get a mention that Marc had moved to Colorado in the first few pages and a few phone calls between Jake and Greg but that is it. Seriously? I would have liked to get a little more back story. More importantly, I would have preferred the book to have taken place in their hometown and not in another state. It took away from the feel and the connection. Jake was completely on his own with this case. Our villain Mario is into using the slave drug to gain his status in The Game. He’s capturing people left and right, keeping them under the drug. One of those captives is Marianna. Angela has gotten close to him by pretending to be exactly what he’s into: rich, ditzy, sluts. The book was fully focused on this case and much of the content was unnecessary and repetitive. Once the case began coming to an end, it felt like everything fell into place and wrapped up entirely too easily. There were hardly any injuries, fights, or close calls. The Game was ended, Angela saved her sister, and her and Jake make it official. I was disappointed in Stay Hungry. KFI was a bounty hunter business in the first two books, not a bodyguard service like it turned out to be in Stay Hungry. Angela had enough of a detective background; she and Jake should have taken on a more partnership role storyline in this book like Greg and Haley’s story did. less
