review 1: Bayard's niche is to take historically researched events involving semi-famous people and add a little weirdness to the story. I recently read Candice Millard's well documented River of Doubt - about Theodore Roosevelt's epic exploratory of an uncharted South American river. Bayard has reconstructed part of the voyage, but has added a fictional meeting of Theodore and his son Kermit with a group of natives known as Cinta Larga.

... moreists, the mythical beast is a real mythical beast, and someone did go off to find food but came back unharmed. If you haven't read the beautiful The River of Doubt: Theodore Roosevelt's Darkest Journey by Candice Ballard, I suggest reading that before Roosevelt's Beast in order to get the full impact of this Dan Simmons-like supernaturally inclined (think The Terror) fictional re-creation. less
