review 1: I think I've read all of Louis Bayard's books. When I opened this one, I found myself relaxing into it immediately, the way you do when you recognize a good writer and feel you're in good hands. This book was perhaps a bit less high drama than some of his others, which I wouldn't say was a flaw. It felt quieter. I enjoyed it very much, despite guessing several aspects of the ending, and the secret, well in advance. But good characterizations, excellent research, and an interesting story.
