review 1: I found this book on Summer Jewish fiction reading for 2013 put out by The Forward. The only Jewish thing about the book might be the setting in Manhattan . This is the story of upper class WASP life on the east coast. Nevertheless, the story resonates because of the ages of the characterizes and its central themes: why do some marriages end badly while others are happy? Told from the viewpoint of Phillip, an aging widowers and novelists, the plot revolves around why Lucy and Thomas Snow's marriage failed. The story is made up of Phillip's conversations with those who knew the couple. It vividly captures Lucy's character, a spoiled young woman who turns into a bitter old one. Definitely a great summer read.
review 2: I found this book a little slow at first, b
... moreut by the end I could not put it down. Despite what the book jacket says, I found the character of the narrator to be much more intriguing than Lucy De Bourgh, the narrator's former acquaintance whose marriage he is trying to investigate to presumably write about in his next novel. I found the idea of a future novel to be an interesting conceit of the narrators', and I wondered throughout if the reader was meant to see him as a reliable or unreliable narrator. Overall, I'd say this is an easy and enjoyable read, though hardly groundbreaking. less

Enjoyable enough, but a rather abrupt ending and not a lot of substance.

Nicely constructed. But the lives of the rich -- so sad.
