review 1: Rose's sophomore year continues with ongoing drama wrapped tightly around her crush, Jamie and high school queen bee, Regina. It didn't seem like the situation progressed very far in this book; it was the same idea over and over. I appreciated the introduction of a homosexual character who is the victim of bullying. I think that's an important topic that should be discussed more in current young adult literature. I did not like the main character, Rose, in this sequel though. She was mean, self-absorbed, and whiny. I guess that's a realistic portrayal of a teen girl, but I kind of expect protagonists in YA to be cooler, more confident, and wittier than I could have ever been in real life. Reading about Rose in this book was like watching a train wreck. Just when things loo... morek good for her, she says or does something that leaves you going, "Doh!" I'm not sure if I'm interested in reason further in this series.
review 2: Terrific job by an author who seems to have her thumb on the pulse of teen America. Scarey thought! I loved being inside Rosie's head while she tackles being the best friend of a take-charge, popular girl, in love with someone she really doesn't understand despite their emotional connection while still grieving over her father's death and trying to understand her brother's drug use and her mother's attempts to put their lives back together. This is what it's like to grow up, slowly and painfully through high school in the 21st century. This is fresh, challenging and inspiring YA at its best. Can't wait for the next installment, Louise! less
