review 1: What a wonderful, heart warming story! Set in the midst of the Great Depression, this story of how Pura Belpre made Spanish speaking immigrants feel welcome in the New York City Public Library is inspirational. The use of old newspapers from that era in each illustration is different and interesting. The brief biography of Pura Belpre and the glossary at the back of the book add to the value of the book. Also, the notation at the bottom of the last page tells us that the book's publisher, Children's Book Press, is a nonprofit publisher of multicultural literature for children.I would recommend this book to readers in second grade and up. It would work well in a multicultural unit, a unit about women for women's history month, or a displayabout libra... moreries.
review 2: The Storytellers Candle, written in both English and Spanish, gives us a glimpse into the life of Pura Belpre, the first Puerto Rican librarian in New York City. In this story, Hildamar walks past the library every day and wants to go inside, but her mother tells her no because she doesn’t speak English and the librarys aren’t filled with Spanish books. However, one day, a Spanish speaking librarian, Pura Belpre, visits Hildamar’s classroom and tells Hidamar that libraries are open to everyone. From that day forward, a whole new world is opened to Hildamar and her family. I thoroughly enjoyed this story about Pura Belpre! less
