Key West Food Critic Mystery
review 1: “Fire, Fatality and Key West—What a Heady Cocktail!”Hayley’s Snow’s life is always chaotic and Christmastime for “Key Zest’s” Food Critic is no exception. With the news that Hayley’s Mother, Janet Snow, has decided to winter in Key West with her beau, Sam—(Janet’s licking her wounds and starting a new job with “Small Chef”, a catering firm), an uncertain future due to snarky Ava Faulkner, owner of the “Key Zest” publication and nervous over an upcoming interview with well-known, perfectionist/Chef Edel Waugh, owner of the new restaurant, “Bistro on the Bight”, Hayley’s plate is full to overflowing! To complicate matters, when Hayley arrives at “The Bight”, she is amazed at Chef Waugh’s hot temper and acid tongue and is shocked when... more Chef asks her to help figure out who is undermining her restaurant’s grand opening. Could it be her ex-husband, or one of her “Tired of her tirades” staff? Hayley agrees, but is she biting off more than she can chew? In the midst of this muddle, much to Hayley’s dismay, Janet decides to host a dinner party and round of golf at the swanky private island restaurant, “Latitudes” and the guest list includes aloof LPGA pro Cassie Lancaster and her Psychologist/Husband, Joe and Hayley’s Psychologist friend, Eric. Not being “Up to Par” on the course, Hayley joins the group for dinner and a tasting toward her review. She spots polluted Chef Waugh and drives her to her nearby condo—but not for long, as the Chef re-surfaces screaming that her restaurant is ablaze. Has Chef’s dream gone up in smoke? Who would want to extinguish her dreams before her place ever opens? Who is Juan Carlos Alonso? Did he play a part in the problems with the Bistro, or did the previous owner of the fish and chip place have a hand in it? Will Ava get her way and sell “Key Zest” to investors so it can be taken to new heights without Hayley? Is that the trouble surrounding Hayley and all of those she loves and cares about Lorenzo the Tarot Card reader saw in her cards? Once again, you don’t have to start with the first of the five in this series to get acquainted with Hayley, Sr. Citizen Houseboat roomie Miss Gloria, Hayley’s heartthrob/boss Wally Beile and co-worker Danielle among others. The Author has graciously provided yummy recipes for some of the culinary delights mentioned within the story pages including “Scarlett O’Hara Cupcakes”, “Hot Dog Casserole”, “Spaghetti Bolognese” and decadent “Key Lime Parfaits”, as well as a snippet of the next Key West Food Critic Mystery due out in the Summer of 2015. Don’t miss either one!Nancy Narma
review 2: Another sure fire hit by Lucy Burdette.Almost Christmas. What better place to spend it that in beautiful Key West? Hayley's Mom Janet and Sam, mom's gentleman caller have rented a condo there so they will be close to Hayley for the holidays, or longer. Janet has taken a position at a local caterer's, so she won't be nagging Hayley 24-7. Meanwhile Hayley is concerned about her own job at Key Zest, thanks to Ava, and only time will tell the outcome of that. Not surprisingly that throws a kink in Hayley and Wally's relationship. Dear Miss Gloria is still sharing the houseboat with Hayley and sharing her vast knowledge. Whether anyone asks for it or not. When a new restaurant is soon to open, Hayley is assigned to write an article on it. She is also invited to the soft opening, by Edel Waugh, the chef/owner. The night before the opening, a fire breaks out on the property, thankfully the only loss is a storage shed. This leaves Key West shocked, but not as shocked as they are when a body is discovered in the shed. Was this a terrible accident or a case of murder? Because Hayley feels that Edel could use a friend, as she really doesn't know anyone else in town, Hayley promises Edel that she will help her. After she is shot at, and Miss Gloria is kidnapped, perhaps Hayley bit off more that she could have chewed. This series is another on my favorite list, as is Lucy Burdette. With social media as it is, it seems so easy to reach an author, as opposed to years ago, when it was wondered if there were real people behind the books. This is the 5 book in this series, they are all captivating and the characters are so easy to get to know.A copy of this book was sent to me by the author/publisher in hopes I would review it. However, receiving the complimentary copy did not influence my review. less

I enjoyed reading this novel except the ending was a little thin and fairytale.
