review 1: Miguel is a NYC detective who had just had big trouble with a justified shooting that had the press and public against him. He's now got a case of kids who have been disappearing in a certain Bronx neighborhood and has been assigned to one of the most difficult guys, who has problems keeping partners. And the Captain takes an interest, pushing them to consult with Nikolai Adelman, who has an in with the close-mouthed, anti-police neighborhood because he's known as their shaman. Miguel doesn't have time for the crazy idea of a shaman and the crazy shaman himself, who is a university professor and best-selling writer and spouts a lot of yiddish, but lives in the dangerous neighborhood--and keeps his door unlocked! --and talks to the local drug-pushers! --and says some cra... morezy stuff about what may be going on with the missing kids!So it's sort of paranormal, but you don't really see much of it and it's a slow revelation. The mystery is strange--is it a real perp or several perps or indeed, something other-worldly?And is this shaman guy for real or just insane? And how does Miguel become increasingly involved with him? It's fascinating to see how it all gets resolved. The characters and situations are certainly unique!
review 2: This was just a great story, period. The romance was secondary to the plot, which includes mystical stuff, police procedural, difficult backstory, etc. The protags dance around each other in a love/hate relationship brought on by the case Miguel is investigating. Nikolai is a shaman in a ghetto neighborhood where children are missing. Miguel has issues stemming from time in Iraq and an incident he was involved in there, along with a more recent case where he killed a man who he thought was threatening with a gun that was actually a toy. Nikolai knows what Miguel needs and discovers that Miguel has his own links to the supernatural world. Just for fun, Miguel's partner is a blunt, no nonsense guy who adds the right amount of stress and skepticism to the story. Couldn't put it down. less

good story with interesting characters. lacks a little of sex but at the end it's not so important !

Book was OK. Just didn't find it gripping as I kept setting it aside and then coming back to it.
