review 1: I had high hopes for this, after reading Mrs. Poe. That book had me aching with emotion, while this one left me wondering why I should care. It also has a few things going for it: feminist heroine, medieval court intrigue, romance. She paints a portrait of court life, but none of the characters have much depth, and none of them are even mildly interesting, save maybe the poor queen. Such a shock after Mrs. Poe kept me on edge and aching with emotion for hours. I wanted so hard to love this book but had to settle for just friends.
review 2: It took a bit of time and effort for my interest for this book to develop (which is why I didn't rate this a 4 or 5), but once things began to pick up (a little past the halfway point) I found myself enjoying the story signif... moreicantly more. The history is very interesting, and the author did a very good job in mixing fact with fiction. I was surprised to discover how many of the details in the story were based on history. I learned a great deal, and enjoyed the story once I got over what (in my opinion) was a slow beginning. less
