review 1: This distracting busy mash-up of Dickens and Wilkie Collins (published in the UK under the title Tom-All-Alone's) has some of the ingredients for a better novel. Some scenes are vivid but too much of it gives the impression of being hastily written. It needed a firm editor with a sharp pruning knife. The omniscient narrator overplays her hand with arch affectation, contrived literary allusions and a surfeit of local colour.
review 2: In the style of Dickens - but I don't particularly like Dickens' style. Charles is quite the headstrong young man - because of course, he's much more intelligent than others. That is, except when he's too headstrong to see the obvious. Then we need the uncle with dementia to see things clearly. Or perhaps we need the mute black ser... morevant girl to see to his physical and mental wounds. Apparently there are more books with this particular lead character but I'm not interested at this point. less
