review 1: This distracting busy mash-up of Dickens and Wilkie Collins (published in the UK under the title Tom-All-Alone's) has some of the ingredients for a better novel. Some scenes are vivid but too much of it gives the impression of being hastily written. It needed a firm editor with a sharp pruning knife. The omniscient narrator overplays her hand with arch affectation, contrived literary allusions and a surfeit of local colour.
review 2: In the style of Dickens - but I don't particularly like Dickens' style. Charles is quite the headstrong young man - because of course, he's much more intelligent than others. A "Sherlock Holmes" kind of detective story set in Victorian England. Enjoyable character and read.
