review 1: This book is both a 5 and a 1, so I had to settle on three. Alternate history steam punk America is a pretty cool place, and heroine Kit fits right in. I loved her fierce take on life as she battles her way through the book. Sadly, Disenchanted is hung up by it's plot and it's romance. The plot weakens around the middle. Though plenty is happening, none of it really ties in so my attention wandered. The romance is ridiculous- a love triangle that could be bought from Ikea for it's minimalist adherence to tropes. Added to the fact that Kit gets a serious case of the dumb whenever the hero is nearby made me teeth grinding frustrated. Overall the bad outweighed the good for me, but I wouldn't be surprised if other readers reacted differently. I wish those readers well and hop... moree they enjoy Kit as much as I did.
review 2: A cunning beginning to a new paranormal series by the great Lynn Viehl. Charmian Kittredge doesn't believe in magic. She thinks it's all sleight-of-hand and misdirection. In her mind, they are one and the same. Only problem is, she is a spell-breaker, the most rare type of magic user, someone upon whom magic does not work. As a young woman in the city of Rumsen, in a Victorian United States where the Revolutionary War was lost by the upstart colonials, Charmian earns her living proving magic doesn't work. When she is hired by Lady Walsh to find out who is tormenting her, Charmian (or Kit, as she prefers) discovers magic isn't being employed, someone is actually working against Lady Walsh. But Kit isn't prepared for the real culprit, Zarath, a spirit warlord imprisoned thousands of years ago by mages. Zarath is trying to manifest himself and he needs a human host to inhabit and then he plans to overthrow the Torian government and rule the world again. Kit has to stop Zarath from inhabiting the body of her lover and stop the warlord from imprisoning the entire population of the continent. Very entertaining for anyone who enjoys a little romance with their paranormal. less
