review 1: Interesting and a bit suspenseful story about family, friendship, women as healers, and how secrets can erode trust and sense of self. This is a first novel and I found the characters' voices a bit uneven, the prose by turns lyrical and clunky, sometimes confusing. Very enjoyable in parts, especially the magical realism, but also a bit off-putting at times. I would definitely read her next book.
review 2: Intriguing book with a combination of elemnts from three other books I have liked: The Language of Flowers (meaning of flowers/herbs, abandoned children, adoptive mothers), The Fate of Mercy Alban (witchcraft and ghosts) and A Grown-Up Kind of Pretty (abuse, grandmothers raising children, secrets). Also other themes of friendship, women's rights... All... more packed into one book that was an enjoyable read. less
