review 1: When I saw that this book was on several Best of 2013 lists, I wondered what could possibly be so wonderful about a counting book. Sure, monkeys are fun and cute, but how could it be original enough to be garnering all these rave reviews? Then I read the book to my little guy, and was terrifically surprised by its cleverness. I couldn't wait to read it to the K-2 kids at my oldest son's school because it is an absolutely perfect read-aloud-- bright, funny, and interactive. The children were completely drawn in by this book (as was I). Highly recommended.
review 2: Wherever Mac Barnett goes in his books, hilarity follows. Count the monkeys. It sounds so straightforward and simple. But it's not so simple when there is a cobra on the first page, scaring the mo... morenkeys away. Each spread following, an increasing number of animals or people chases away the previous ones, with monkeys to count always promised on the next page. Monkeys finally do show up in the end papers, dozens of them. Love that Mac Barnett! less
