review 1: “On a cold afternoon, in a cold little town….Annabelle found a box filled with yarn of every colour.” And Annabelle started knitting and she transformed her town with bright colour. Annabelle has a spool of never-ending yarn and with it she knits everyone, and everything, and all the animals, sweaters. She changes her town into a colour splendor with her amazing yarn, even if it might not be ready. When an Archduke hears about Annabelle and her yarn, he comes and demands she sells it to him, but Annabelle will never sell her yarn. Extra Yarn is a lovely, humorous story about accepting and embracing change and finding happiness. Barnett does an excellent job of setting the mood and scene with his beautiful illustrations.• Caldecott Honor 2013• Boston Globe-Horn B... moreook Award 2012• E.B. review 2: "Extra Yarn" is a story about a young girl, Annabelle, who finds an unusual box of yarn. After she has knit a sweater for herself, she realizes that she still has some yarn leftover. She begins making sweaters for everyone in her small town, but never runs out of yarn. When an Archduke finds out about the box of yarn, he attempts to buy it from her. Annabelle refuses his offers, and one night he decides to steal it from her. After the Archduke has stolen the box, he opens it only to find it empty. The theme of the story is the importance of sharing and the negativity of greed. This book would be good to show children that it is not good to be greedy. You could ask a class questions like: Why did the box never run out of yarn for Annabelle? or Why wasn't there any yarn for the evil Archduke? These questions would lead to the point of the book that there was always yarn for Annabelle because she shared it with everyone. less
