review 1: This book is tough to sum up, and I won't waste space trying; see the publisher's blurb for all the summary you'll need. This book has a decent plot, but I read it for its characters, especially Cynthia and, of course, Flora. I didn't always like Flora--she could be horribly selfish, pigheaded, petulant, impulsive, and silly. She treats her lover, Paul, shamefully at times (though my judgment of that softened--you'll see why), and she certainly treats Cynthia and her father very shabbily indeed. The thing is, though, I couldn't really blame her. She's hurt, and lost, and more upset than she has any right to be. She wants to hold onto her father in death in the way she never held him in life. Cynthia, much as Flora hates to admit it, was the one who took the time to know hi... morem outside of a narrow, restrictive context. Still, Flora redeems herself; not prettily, like the heroine of an L.M. Montgomery novel, but redeem herself she does. And it's beautiful. And the author does all of this so brilliantly that I find myself humbled. Take this book slow. Savour it. You may find yourself sad when it's over.
review 2: For the third time I sat down and tried to read this book, and for the third time I closed it without reaching the end. I tend to be able to trudge through slower stories when I have run out of other books to read. It's obvious, though, that this book is going nowhere, and the main character is an irritating and whiny little brat. I just created an "Unfinished" shelf on Goodreads simply to have somewhere to put this disappointment of a book. less
