review 1: Throughout this book I was unable to decide if I liked it or not. It is well written but in an unusual style which, at times, made me feel as if I was being talked down to. At other points in the book I did feel as if I had learned something - though not necessarily something I wanted to learn. I finished reading it because it was our book club book of the month but I won't be reading the rest in the series.
review 2: This was a satisfying though not perfect read. What Mr. Mackay did here was nothing new since many before him attempted this kind of story telling, including Richard Stark and Duane Swierczynski. Glasgow as a setting is excellent and the cast of characters is also great, too. His style, the way he tells a story may be at times a bit tiring but the
... more result is a very convincing novel whose ending nevertheless raised some questions in me. I'm very much looking forward to reading the rest of the series. A perfect choice for those who are terminally fed up with novels that feature cops and agents and whatnot in earth shattering situations. A very promising crime novel, way above the usual crop. less
