review 1: I love reading crime novels written by foreign authors. They give you such an inside look at the societies in which they are set. This one doesn't disappoint. The story takes place in South Africa in 1952, a time and a place stained by apartheid. Like so many other times and places, there is no justice or true freedom for the minority members of society. In this case, the Boers (whites with Dutch ancestry) see the two tiers of society below them (Coloreds and Blacks) as less than human and treat them without honor, or respect, or fairness. They can be killed with relative immunity. Sound familiar? Reflecting a woman's sensitivity, but told with all the grit and attitude of a man; this story refuses to let you go. You may feel a bit uneasy reading it because of all... more of the human ugliness it exposes, but don't let that keep you from finishing it. It's a hum-dinger of a tale with an ending that you won't see coming. Satisfaction guaranteed!
review 2: This novel initially caught my eye because of the setting, early 1950's apartheid South Africa. Not only did I find what feels totally realistically like an insider's view of the era, but the mystery proved satisfyingly complex. The plot took many turns in some unexpected directions, but the various surprises are never unearned or unbelievable. The story and the characters seemed fresh and intriguing. I look forward to reading the other books in this series. less
