Detective Emmanuel Cooper
review 1: Malla Nunn is my new literary crush. While not perfect, this second Emmanuel Cooper novel delivers. Nunn is great on place: now I have to go to Durban. And she so well describes the darkness and chaos that must be part of any city's underground, and Cooper is the perfect noir hero. Nunn is the scribe of sadness and loss. In this venture Cooper has lost his detective card and is working under cover in Durban, South Africa investigating police officers for the morally ambiguous Major van Neikerk. The murder of a street child sets off Cooper's moral compass, and the investigation leads to more murders and more colorful characters including an amazing femme fatale.
review 2: Another masterfully written book by Malla Nunn whom I thought was a man when I read the fir
... morest Detective Emmanuel Cooper book. Ms. Cooper writes wonderful descriptions of the atmosphere (which is not wonderful) and the landscape of South Africa in the 1950's. The characters, for the most part, are interesting and sympathetic and their motivations clear. I did find Major van Niekerk to be a little confusing but I was glad to see the return of Dr. Zwiegman and Detective Constable Shabalala. The plan is to read the next 2 in the series as soon as possible. less
