Detective Emmanuel Cooper
review 1: I bought this novel immediately after finishing "A beautiful place to die", because I'd loved the characters and setting so much. I couldn't wait to find out what had happened to Emmanuel Cooper and wondered whether Shabalala would reappear in this new city far from Jacob's Rest (he does but when he does, it makes sense). Emmanuel's been demoted due to the fallout from what happened in Jacob's Rest, but he's still protected by Van Niekerk who's assigned him on a spying mission in Durban's freightyards. He finds a (white) boy with his throat slashed and, next to him, two Indian teenagers ("nonwhites" yet in Apartheid, "classified" as much higher than "Coloureds" and "Natives".) He picks up some clues and ends up accused of the crime...

... mores second book of the series there is a change of scene to the bustling harbor city of Durban, South Africa. It’s the 1950‘s and Apartheid law is in effect as Detective Emmanuel Cooper works against the clock to solve the multiple murders in which he is the prime suspect. Having lost his “white” status and his job in the police department, he faces even more challenges this time around. Zulu constable Shabalala, a friend and colleague from the first book, makes a welcome return. Let the Dead Die is a very good and well written mystery/international thriller. less
