review 1: I was a little disappointed by the beginning of this book. The story was solid and so was the romance but there were some things that just kept pulling me out of the story. For example, in the beginning if the book the author kept alternating between Gresham's title. It was a bit confusing, I knew who he was but it felt like the author couldn't make up her mind on what to call him. Also the attraction between Maddie & Christian is apparent from the beginning. One really has to read the previous books to know that they know each other pretty well. Anyhow once I got past that the story picked up. There were some really good surprises and insights in to the secondary characters. It was refreshing & a bit jarring to know Lord Essex as a younger married man. Lord Linton was not... more a complete cad.
review 2: A lukewarm read. The story and characters and their relationships never grabbed hold of my attention. While Manda Collins has a good style of writing, this book is not her best effort. Since I read this one immediately after book two of the series (How to romance a rake) maybe the writing paled on me. Both Maddie and Christian are interesting characters but the development of their friendship into physical attraction into emotional entanglement happened at a hectic pace. Strangely, for a budding novelist, Maddie doesn't even once sit down to pen her thoughts, frame a story...whatever, through out the book. less
