review 1: I thought this book was way better than the first one. Juliet was strong and Alec was just a sweetheart. The mystery part of this book revolves around Juliet's friend who had gone missing. There have been many occurences of fallen women who have gone missing. Their first suspect was Il Maestro, whose paintings have featured women in great torment before their death. The danger was greater since they suspected that Il Maestro was the man Juliet's mother had been foisting on her. She is being pressured to marry him since her mother owes him a debt and she is the payment. To save her from this fate, Alec decided to marry Juliet. The story revolves around Alec and Juliet. Alec had been searching for a wife and set his sights on Madeline, Juliet's friend. Despite this, he canno... moret keep his mind off of Juliet and spends more time with her despite his own plans. They grow closer together and he gets entangled in her problems. Juliet has an emotionally abusive mom. She is selfish and tried to pawn her off so that she can live in riches. She also has a distant father whose life is dedicated to his ambassadorial work. When she tried to escape her mother's marital plans for her to wed an old rich man, her foot was amputated and she had lived with a limp since. Her mother tried to make her blend into the background so that her secret won't be revealed. Now, her mother is selling her off to the artist and isn't fond of Juliet's coming out in the limelight. In the middle of this is the investigation for the missing music teacher. It turned out that Anna Turner wasn't a victim but an accomplice. She had been luring fallen women to their death. When she discovered that the artist had been having his way with them, she murdered him. She kidnapped Juliet to recruit her into her mission and planned to train her daughter to do the same.
review 2: This book was definitely a 2.5 for me. I liked Alec and Juliet, but the writing felt sloppy. The plot was helter skelter and the pacing was a roller coaster. Also, and I noticed this in the first book in this series, there were several continuity errors throughout, like the author had forgotten she had written something differently earlier in her process. This wouldn't have been a problem if there was some explanation but, for example, when we are told all book that Juliet's father is abroad and then suddenly he is home to give a man permission to marry her and then two pages later he is in Paris, it's odd without an explanation. And there were several other instances (an important letter never mentioned again etc) that just added to the plot's messiness. It's a shame, too, because Alec and Juliet were both so likable. But I needed more from their romance and a little less mystery. Also, the title of this book makes no sense as Alec is not a rake and Juliet doesn't really romance him. Just a disappointment, because I was so looking forward to their story. less

3+The story was a bit all over the place, but it had a sweet relationship and a nice couple.

Not bad. Aside from the Americanisms, of course.
