review 1: Ce livre rend vraiment nostalgique.
review 2: Have not heard of Marc Levy before coming upon this book
... moreby chance, though the blurb says he is one of the huge bestselling authors in France today and this book shows why as it is the kind of warm, remember the happy days of childhood, written with extraordinary narrative energy that made me read it end to end in one sitting - it is not a long novel and I am not sure it has a high reread value or that it will remain with me for long (though one never knows of course); for a similar US author i would say Michael Baron fits, though Marc Levy's book is quite European The thief of shadows is a first person narration from the title character whom we see as a lonely pre-teen first, while later we see him as a medical student; the ability to "steal the shadow of a person" or more prosaically to make people confide their deepest feelings, secrets, desires, fears, make him on the one hand someone quite suited to be a doctor and making friends easily with people, but on the other hand makes him a bit distant and harder to get really close to, as both school friend Luc - son of the local baker - and college girlfriend Sophie, a no-nonsense and practical medical student discover On the hand his connection with a young deaf-mute girl he meets on a seaside holiday and to whom he communicates by making and flying kites turns out to be much deeper...Anyway, this is a book to read and enjoy especially if you want a warm, happy but not too cloyingly sweet read less
