A Carpenter and Quincannon Mystery
review 1: Having just finished this I do have a few comments. I enjoyed the characters a lot. Carpenter and Quincannon make a charming daring duo and I look forward to their next adventure. The mystery itself was quite good. It was interesting to read how all the mystery bits came together cohesively without leaving any 'red herrings' dangling about. Kudos to Duo. I also enjoyed the description of the location - San Francisco in the late 1890s. The writers made a few mistakes but on the whole it was quite enjoyable and it didn't detract from the story at all. Now for the bad. Holmes - why? He didn't add a bit to the story. I just didn't seen a reason to have him in the story at all except to get in the way or spur Quincannon on as a rival. I hope he's not in the next book. He was th... moree least interesting of all the characters.
review 2: True confession time, I bought this book mainly because of the two pretty people on the cover. I liked the two main characters, John Quincannon and Sabina Carpenter, who have left their previous careers with the Secret Service and the Pinkerton Detective Agency, respectively, to open up their own detective agency. It was hard to get a sense of whether or not there is any chemistry, of any variety, between the two of them since they spend the lion's share of the book working seemingly separate cases. For me, this was something of disappointment because I like to see how main characters interact with each other. Without that interaction, it's hard for me to care enough to invest in their friendship, work partnership, or romance - whatever the case may be. Another character that I'm not sure about is Sherlock Holmes. I'm not sure why the authors felt it necessary to include this character, who may or may not be THE Sherlock Holmes. I suppose he's meant to inject some humor but in my opnion his inclusion only serves to detract from the abilities of Quincannon and Carpenter since he's the one to solve one crucial aspect of the mystery. The mystery itself was okay, pulling from the individual cases that John and Sabina are working on. Overall, this was a decent start if this is meant to be a series and I will check out a second book if one is forthcoming. less

A crossover with Sherlock Holmes in the first novel? Kinda hauling out the big guns.

This kind of read like YA, but I don't think it was supposed to.
