review 1: I read this mainly because the events described all took place in locations around Michigan that I'm familiar with, from the Detroit area to the northern vacationland area. I've been through the Good Hart area a few times on the "tunnel of trees" road, and it's hard to believe such a horrific crime took place in such an idyllic place. This book lays out the facts and sequence of events of the investigation very well. It certainly made me come to some conclusions about the perpetrator, but I guess there's still quite a bit of controversy about it.Well worth reading if you have any connection to "up north" Michigan.
review 2: This book had a lot of potential and for about two-thirds of the way I was mesmerized by the 1968 slaughter of a wealthy vacationing family
... morein Northern Michigan that has never been solved. However, the book never comes to a conclusion. I can only describe the book as "trickling off" at the end. A lot of intriguing leads in the case are not probed fully enough by the author and/or it is not fully explained why law enforcement did not further investigate what sounded like promising information. The current Emmett County sheriff is quoted as saying if the murders had occurred recently, DNA profiling and other forensic technology probably would have allowed the case to be solved quickly, and he is probably right. In summary, this book left a lot of questions in my mind which the author should have addressed. And I was really, really distracted by the city of Davison being spelled as "Davidson" at least four times. Um, this was published by the UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN PRESS, a publishing house that should be able to spell local geographic locations properly. less
