review 1: Margaret Forster's novels always seem to hit the nail on the head for me. She gets right down to the nitty gritty of human psychology. Sometimes this makes me want to shout out YES! That's exactly how it was! This was one of those where she touched on parent child relationships that reminded me so much of my childhood. So I read and read until I reached the end and felt a little disappointed then, but I can't say why.
review 2: Gripping story as I would expect from Margaret Forster. Julia, now a therapist who deals with troubled children (troubles either real or imagined by their parents/careers), looks back on her childhood when she was a troubled child herself. She was cared for by a cousin and her family after both her parents passed away but was rebellious
... moreand naughty and is particularly haunted by an incident involving her and her cousin's baby. The slow 'reveal' of Julia's story is wonderfully done - good read. less

Meh. Great premise. Medium development. Could have been so much more.
