review 1: This is an excellent review of the events, decisions and agreements leading to the Great War. MacMillan presents a very readable and detailed account of the history of the five major participants in the Great War from the late 19th Century to the fateful August, 1914. It was particularly interesting for me to get a much better understanding go the major crises of the early 20th Century that were successfully dealt with but, at the same time, further divided the the two opposing European Alliances. I also enjoyed the description of the role England played trying to keep an open hand while also supporting France. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the Great War.
review 2: There was so much on the media earlier this year about the I world war t
... morehat I decided to study the subject. I never enjoyed reading or learning history, so this is kind of a challenge for me. Ms MacMillan book did a great job in describing the events that led to the war, the characters, context, everything in such a didactic tone that even I was able to learn !!Very good and recommended reading. less
