review 1: This book is one you cannot put down! Rental, Nate, Katie, and Chase are tied together with four secrets. This books highlights the dark side of growing up, trusting friends, bullying and junior high school in general. I loved that these kids all deal with their detentions and journals in different ways. As a school counselor, I could relate to the social workers need to help them, desire to save them as well as her need to learn the truth in spite of their pact. I also loved how she was able to help them with out making them change their personalities nor feel guilty about who they are and how they think. The journals were amazingly written: Nate's is a masterpiece, Reneta's also tells her story, and Kate's secret journal is well written. How they use their journa... morels to tell their stories is one of the most amazing aspects if this book! This is one not to be missed! It is well written, interesting, realistic and pertinent to adolescents and adult readers of YA fiction.
review 2: 2 stars. Books that switch POVs break up my reading flow and frustrate me. If you are switching characters at least tell all the stories in 1st or 3rd person, don't switch between them. Each character had a distinctive voice and I did not figure out all four secrets so kudos for plot twists. Came close, but Nate's was not quite what I was expecting. My problems with this book are in the adult characters, especially the social workers. When a kid in juvie is describing his home life with a pill popping mother who spends her life in bed, is said social worker not OBLIGATED to investigate his claim? Not in this book. I also took issue with the non resolution at the end of the book. The biggest, horrible secret and the only one that was criminal appears to be the only one that actually remains a secret and that is disgusting. less
