review 1: I loved the feel of this book and, of course, the rotten characters, and that it was very different from most books out there. The only thing stopping it from a higher rating was that there wasn't anyone to root for, no real protagonist, and I'm not sure really what the plot was. It was a bit like an anthropological study of Rollrock Island--which I appreciate for being unique, but it meant my heart wasn't really engaged. Still, I loved to style and will definitely scope out more by this author.

There are some potentially confusing jumps in time as the book spans three generations, but individual passages are so unique it is worth the effort to keep track of the characters. The story is unified b... morey the central character of Misskaela, who discovers against her will that she was born with a unique bond to the selkies. Misskaela is deeply flawed, yet generates sympathy for her choices and her defiance or at least endurance in the face of tragedy. Entitled 'Sea Hearts' in Australia. less
