review 1: This book was kind of crazy. If you are familiar with the selkie folklore which I am really familiar with for some reason. It's all about that. This small port town goes crazy for seal women. A witch bent on fucking shit up brings them out of the water for men for a nice price. Soon every human woman is gone from the town. All taken over by very stepford wives seal women. The book takes a lot of different perspectives of the town from different families involved. My favorite part was about the witch and why she turned into the nasty lady she was. Totally recommend this book to all!!!
review 2: The Brides of Rollrock Island portrays a cyclical time-span of a small island--from no seal wives to seal wives back to no seal wives. Its story follows haphazardly the l
... moreife of Misskaella, the witch of Rollrock Island, from her birth to her death, though only the second chapter depicts her pov. The other chapters follow a family through the generations and the impact the seal wives have, the personal toll of that magic. The chapters address all the possible psychological affects sea wives would have, each chapter immediately dropping into a very close 1st person with little back story, which is jarring but also effective in that the pov matches the visceral, lyrical prose. I love selkie legends, and this novel is unique in the sadness it depicts both of the islanders and of the selkies, though never once dropping into a selkie's pov. less
