review 1: 3.5 Stars. This was due back to the library, so I took a short hiatus from Fire of the Covenant to read it. Surprisingly, it was similar to Fire of the Covenant, but set in modern times. There's a nuclear attack on the USA and Amelie, who was crippled as a child, must trek with her mom, brother & best friend/new love interested from WA to Utah. I thought the premise of the story interesting (and was mentally packing my own backpack for what I'd want to take with me), but it felt a little rushed and had some crazy plot twists thrown in; terrorist with a nuke who are discovered by teens on a motorcycle, prison rioters dressed as cops who take Amelie hostage, but don't actually hurt her, a rising boy-band pop star as a possible love interest and a missing dad on secret assign... morement, but nobody will actually share those details. I feel this book had great potential, but when I finished I just thought it was a smidge wacky. If there's a follow up, maybe that'll be a smoother tale.
review 2: oh how I wish covenant communications would allow it's authors/ editors/ book making people to run with their ideas... expand them and fill them in, instead of making them into these... useless... urg... gah!! I loved the characters, was fascinated by the idea of the plot, loved the references to the church (they felt authentic instead of gimmicky... hey, a mormon book, we better put churchy stuff in here!). It was an ok book. Everything just moved so quickly, nothing seemed developed or fleshed out properly. Sub-plots appeared and resolved in a paragraph or two. Amelie's disability was annoying but did little to actually deter her from walking hundreds of miles. There was plenty of food, and very little peril. There didn't HAVE to be peril, per say, but if you're going to introduce it, wouldn't it be better to actually make it seem scary instead of just another sub-plot to introduce and resolve? Most of the characters were forgettable, and could easily have been interesting and fleshed out. It was a waste of a good idea and not bad writing in my opinion. less

A good story but rather predictable and a bit dull in places.
