review 1: This third mystery is the richest so far. Details about the history of the island are revealed as archaeology students search for artifacts from the Viking Age. Murders occur, and the private and public lives of Inspector Knutas and a reporter, who is a central character in the first two novels, continue to unfold. I am certain that the stories make the most sense if they are read in order, and really do not seem to be meant to stand alone. This author shows promise for being a creator of surprising twists and turns.
review 2: Unknown/The Inner Circle is the third instalment in Mari Jungstedt's series about Anders Knutas, the Gotland detective. As with the previous two, it sets up an interesting mystery for Knutas to solve, aided and/or hindered by Stockholm j
... moreournalist Johan Berg. However, although it starts well enough, this book not only stretches the bounds of credibility, but is also has a disappointingly unsatisfying ending. The premise of the story, like the previous two in the series, is intriguing, beginning with the decapitation of a horse and hints at the revival of an Old Norse cult on Gotland. Unfortunately, the rest of the story left so little impression on me that two months later I can't remember who the human murder victims were. The plot was interesting enough that I kept reading to the end, and I liked the book enough to give it three out five. However, there were several quite major irritations that I was unable to ignore. Firstly, the sheer amount of exposition that Jungstedt uses is unnecessary and interrupts the flow of her narration. Three books into the series I was expecting her writing style to have improved a little, but she still writes too much like a journalist rather than a novelist. The prose is very clunky in places, and I suspect this is not helped by the translator who, although apparently a native English speaker, renders some of the phrases very clumsily indeed. Another major annoyance is Jungstedt's reliance on her two favourite characters, the angsty Emma Winarve and the charisma-free Johan. I find it harder and harder to find anything to like about these two and I wish Jungstedt would concentrate instead on the police investigation, rather than getting sidetracked by Johan's journalism and Emma's constant self-obsessed angsting. Finally, the denouement of this book is somewhat overblown and hard to believe. This is not the worst thing I've ever read, but it could be a lot better. less

A good mystery taking place in Sweden. I did not come close to guessing the answer!
