review 1: kindle/audioThis is a strong first novel, I was mesmerized by it. I love Gwenni, I saw so much in her that was me as a young girl, trying to make her way with a huge imagination, a life that sometimes needed escaping from, a highly sensitive personality (OH! I so related with her feelings about Corned Beef! I have grown to like it, but as a kid? GAG!) and not quite understanding the subtleties of the world and the people around her. She is moving from her quite literal and black and white understanding to a broader and not always comforting view of her world. Growing past the days of magic is hard and it is so sad, I wish my kids had never had to and hope my little grand-baby always retains the magic.Usually I find books with child narrators unbelievable and hard to embrac... moree, but like Flavia de Luce, there is something engaging about her precociousness and innocence that blend so well. It is a book about love and mistakes and I finished the book in tears.Set on the Welsh coast, I felt immersed in the town and surrounding hills, the prose in this book is at times viscerally beautiful. The book is getting mixed reviews, I'm off to read some now to see what's up, but for me (and like always I believe that the right book has to hit you in the right mood, another day and I might not have felt so strongly about this book), this is a wonderful story and Gwenni, Bethan, Mam, Tada, Nain and the rest will live with me for a long time.(If you've read it: What did you think of Auntie Lol? That's all I'll say so there are no spoilers, but feel free to message me!)
review 2: Awe, this was quite lovely. I'm not sure it exactly would qualify as a children's book at all, but it definitely is written with a child-like wonder. I suspect that The Peeb will adore this book. I'll admit it's one of the 8 I picked up at the Exclusive Books warehouse sale and I only bought it because I adored the title :) But I did like reading the book too, it suited my mood, I think. Gwenni is a fantastic little character :) less

It was an ok read but I pretty much predicted the story a third of the way into the book.

Like a different world! Such an easy and fun read I had finished it within two days!

I enjoyed parts of it but was quite depressing in other parts. Average read for me.

My sister still claims she used to fly as a child - shame she didn't write a book!
