review 1: I found this book on my mom's bookshelf and read it while visiting the past few times. It was an easy, interesting read. Nothing fantastic, but certain parts about how they train the dogs and the stories of the dogs and their handlers were interesting. If anything, I wished that it would have picked fewer personal stories and just gone into more detail rather than including a lot of really short ones.
review 2: I enjoyed reading this book. I decided to read this book because I heard the author talk about the book on The Daily Show and the summary she gave caught my attention. This is a informational book about military dogs, specifically dogs who sniff out IEDs. The book made me admire these dogs and their handlers. I connected with the book because Goodavag
... moree made me care about the dogs and their handlers. She developed these characters by writing about their time together in war (e.g. Iraq and Afghanistan). By describing their bond outside of war (e.g. one handler broke down in tears when he saw his dog on the operating table). Another way Goodavage developed amazing characters was by humanizing the dogs- they weren't just animals, they were soldiers (e.g. one of the dogs developed PTSD). Conversely, Goodavage could have wrote more about the handler experience with the dogs before they went to war together and this would have made the dogs and handlers more interesting. All in all, I would use paragraph three on page 190 for a mini lesson on adding relevant details. less

Interesting read. I just couldn't finish the library book in enough time to return it.

Listened to this as an audiobook. Pretty interesting non-fiction.
