review 1: Look, I love this writer, and my love for her has probably added an extra star (or two) to this review. But this book lacked the warmth and heart and humour of my favourites of hers (eg. Is Anybody Out There, Rachel's Holiday), and I was a little creeped out by the central romantic relationship (to say why would be a spoiler). Kudos, though. It was a long book, but the pages just flew by. It won't stop me reading her. I think she is one of the truly great writers of the 20th/21st century.
review 2: I wanted to give this a positive 2.5 stars. It's not Marian's best book, however is an adorable read. I laughed out loud in many spots, teared up in a certain spot and overall was thoroughly entertained. Did it have some weak spots? Of course it did and there are man... morey reviews that point them out in great detail. But overall, as a 50-something married Mom with grandchildren, I was thrilled to read about a mature woman with grown children and all their faults. Too often a nice easy read is a story about a 20-30 something beautiful and slim girl whose soul mate awakens her sexually taut body then rescues her from a slightly less than perfect life and together they experience lifelong bliss and create perfect children. It was refreshing to read about a believably fallible heroine with family and life challenges that aren't wealthy, pretty, perfectly behaved or easily solved. If you are a mature woman looking for a couple days of a fun, silly and charming story to take your mind off of real life, this hits the spot. less
